Levada do Rei
São Jorge, Santana
PR18. This hike follows alongside the water canal of Levada do Rei and it begins near the water treatment plant at Quebradas in São Jorge, ending at the source of the levada in the native forest area of Ribeiro Bonito (water stream). This is one of the most beautiful areas of Laurissilva forest - classified as World Natural Heritage site by UNESCO since December 1999.
Don't miss the São Jorge water mill (moinho in portuguese) nearby, which is approximately three hundred years old and is powered by the water from the Levada do Rei. It grinds wheat, maize, barley and rye grown on the terraces of São Jorge, Santana.
